Since Alfa Romeo did not equip the lower timing chain with a tensioner from the factory, it cannot be retensioned. As mileage increases, this can result in a clearly audible rattling noise from the timing chain housing.
A loose or stretched timing chain does more than just cause noise. The increased play can also lead to excessive wear of the chain and timing gears and, in the worst case, even engine damage.
Replacing the lower timing chain is a very labor-intensive job, as the complete front timing cover, including the pulley and other components, must be removed.
