Alfa Romeo 2600 – The Last of Its Kind
With the introduction of the Alfa Romeo 2600 in 1962, the brand bid farewell to one of its most distinguished traditions: the inline six-cylinder engine. The 2600 was the last Alfa Romeo to feature this classic configuration – a fitting finale to the legendary line that began with the 6C. In this car, style, engineering, and grandezza came together – a true gentleman on wheels.
At its heart was a 2.6-liter aluminum inline-six with twin overhead camshafts. In standard form, it produced 145 hp – powerful, smooth, and confident. Paired with a five-speed gearbox, disc brakes, and independent front suspension, the 2600 offered more than refined driving – it was a true grand tourer, built for covering distances with Italian flair.
Visually, the 2600 exuded quiet confidence. The four-door Berlina, designed in-house by Alfa, had a subtle elegance. But the most striking versions came from Bertone and Touring. The 2600 Sprint, a two-door coupé penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Bertone, blended clean lines with sporty presence. The open-top 2600 Spider, created by Touring, was pure Mediterranean luxury: low, wide, elegant – made for the shores of Lake Maggiore or the Côte d’Azur.
Unlike the lighter Giulietta, the 2600 was no sports car – it was a grand tourer, meant for stylish travel. It impressed not with spectacle, but with composure. Even as the Italian police “Pantera”, it served the state – fast, spacious, and discreet.
Today, the Alfa 2600 is a rare classic with character. To drive one is to experience the final breath of the old Alfa school – cultivated, quiet, powerful, and authentically Italian.
