Alfa Romeo 155 – The Geometry of Front-Wheel Drive
When Alfa Romeo introduced the 155 in 1992, reactions were mixed: no more Transaxle, no more rear-wheel drive or mechanical eccentricity – instead, a Fiat-based platform, transverse engine, front-wheel drive. Was this still a “real” Alfa? The answer was: yes – just a different kind.
Because the 155 wasn’t a retreat, it was a new beginning. Designed by Ermanno Cressoni, its sharp, cool “La Linea” styling brought Alfa into the '90s – clean surfaces, high beltline, narrow lights. Less charm than the 75, but a modern presence.
Technically, Alfa offered a broad range: from the 1.7 Twin Spark to the glorious 2.5 V6 “Busso” with 165 hp and that operatic sound. Also available: Q4 all-wheel drive versions using Lancia Delta Integrale technology, turbocharged engines, refined chassis, and sporty equipment.
But what made the 155 immortal wasn’t the road – it was the racetrack. In 1993, Alfa stunned Germany in the DTM with the 155 V6 TI: all-wheel drive, 420 hp, carbon bodywork – and Gabriele Tarquini, who took the fight to Audi and Mercedes. The 155 also triumphed in BTCC and ITC – no Alfa had ever been so dominant in touring car racing.
A 1995 facelift brought a wider track, round instruments, improved quality – and in “Super” spec, the 155 became sharper than ever, yet always underrated in the market.
Today, the Alfa Romeo 155 is a hidden gem with motorsport DNA – angular, potent, and full of character. It’s Alfa in transition: less romantic, but more effective.
And those who hear the 155 V6 TI know: Alfa could win too – loudly, in red, without compromise.
