Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato – Wedge-Shaped with Character
The Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato was never loud, never made for the masses – and precisely for that reason, it’s now an icon of individualism. When the first Junior Zagato was launched in 1969, based on the GT 1300 Junior, it surprised with a radically different design: low, wedge-shaped, with a striking front and a tensioned glass dome over the rear. Not a classic coupé, but a drivable sculpture penned by Ercole Spada at Zagato.
While the technology came from the proven 105-series chassis and the rev-happy 1.3-liter twin-cam (later also 1.6), the bodywork was completely unique. Aluminum was no longer used, but Zagato created a sleek, aerodynamic shape with functional details: retractable headlamp covers, a large rear hatch, slim bumpers. The drag coefficient was impressively low, and the presence – unforgettable.
Inside, it was all about purism: low seating position, slim steering wheel, clear round dials – with the driver in focus. The front visibility was excellent, the rear glazed like a display case – futuristic, Italian, and uncompromising.
But the Junior Zagato wasn’t just a design object. It drove exactly like an Alfa of its era should: lively, precise, confident in curves. With short overhangs and lightweight construction, it felt more agile than its GT siblings – a coupé for connoisseurs.
Only about 1,500 units of the 1300 and 1,100 of the 1600 were built up to 1975. The production numbers stayed small – the impact, immense. The Junior Zagato was never meant for the crowd – but for those in search of the extraordinary.
Today it stands as one of the most exclusive 105-series Alfas: individual, elegant, and emotional. Driving one means not just operating a car – but expressing a design philosophy on wheels.
