Alfa Romeo GTV / Spider – Pure Bella Macchina
When the new Alfa Romeo GTV and Spider (Type 916) launched in 1995, one thing was clear: Alfa was alive again. After years of technical restraint and uniform front-wheel-drive models, the brand once again made an emotional statement – wedge-shaped, low-slung, full of temperament. It was a dramatic return of Italian design flair in an era of sober lines.
The design was crafted by Pininfarina – dramatic and distinctive. The GTV with its flat rear window and pronounced spoiler lip; the Spider, open and sensual with a taut silhouette and fabric top. Both shared the same platform, yet each had its own soul.
Under the bonnet: pure driving pleasure. From the lively 2.0 Twin Spark, the punchy 2.0 V6 Turbo, to the glorious 3.0 and later 3.2 “Busso” V6 engines with up to 240 hp – the sound, the throttle response, and the rev-happy character made the 916 one of the last true goosebump Alfas. Combined with a sport-tuned chassis, front-wheel drive, and precise steering, the GTV and Spider were cornering companions – quirky, but brilliant.
Inside: driver-focused, low-slung seats, classic dials, and that special Alfa feel – later updated, but never without soul.
Built until 2005, the GTV and Spider underwent several evolutionary steps – visually and technically – but always remained truly Alfa: passionate, irrational, and beautiful.
Today, the 916 GTV and Spider are considered modern classics – emotional, full of character, and surprisingly usable. Those who drive one choose not efficiency, but what Alfa has always been about: a feeling.
