Alfa Romeo 147 – Compact Class with Charisma
When the Alfa Romeo 147 hit the market in 2000, it proved that a compact car can combine style, sportiness, and emotion. As the successor to the 145 and 146, it marked a new era in both design and technology.
Designed at the Centro Stile Alfa Romeo under Walter de’ Silva, the 147 was rounded, elegant, and full of tension – with short overhangs, muscular shoulders, and the signature Alfa Scudetto grille. The hidden rear door handles gave it a coupe-like look despite its five-door layout. Compact, yet full of presence.
Inside, the 147 was modern and refined: classic round dials, a sporty steering wheel, and a clean, driver-focused center console. The seating position was low and engaging – classic Alfa. Build quality improved significantly, and options included navigation, climate control, and a Bose sound system.
Under the hood: Twin Spark engines (1.6, 2.0) with rev-happy nature and a throaty sound. Later came the powerful JTD common-rail diesels – efficient yet still full of Alfa soul. The highlight: the 147 GTA (from 2002) with the legendary 3.2-liter "Busso" V6, 250 hp, flared arches, and raw driving pleasure. Not a gentle hot hatch, but a wild, emotional machine.
The 147 received a mild facelift in 2004 and stayed in production until 2010. Despite its front-wheel drive and shared platform, it remained unmistakably Alfa – passionate, stylish, and unique.
