Alfa Romeo 159 – Strength with Style
When the Alfa Romeo 159 replaced the 156 in 2005, Alfa aimed higher: more space, more substance, more premium appeal. Built on the so-called Premium Platform - developed jointly with Saab and GM - the 159 wasn’t just a successor, but a step into a new dimension of Alfa saloons: solid, confident, and stylish.
The design, crafted by Giugiaro and the Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, was spot on: a long, stretched silhouette, muscular shoulders, the deep Scudetto grille, and triple headlights per side that resembled predatory eyes. The result was a car that looked strong, fast, and serious. The interior? High-quality, driver-focused, and elegantly Italian. Aluminum, leather, and clean instruments turned every drive into a performance.
Under the hood, a wide range of engines was available: from the 1.8 MPI and JTS direct-injection units to powerful JTDm diesels with up to 210 hp. The top-of-the-line featured a 3.2-liter V6 - visually a nod to the "Busso", technically GM, but sonically still charismatic. Paired with Q4 all-wheel drive and a 6-speed gearbox, the 159 became a true Gran Turismo.
Despite its qualities, the 159 divided opinion. Its platform was heavy, and its performance leaned more toward confidence than aggression - but that fit its character. The 159 wasn’t a lightweight athlete like the 156, but a premium grand tourer in sedan form: refined, secure, and unmistakably Alfa.
Production ended in 2011, with no direct successor. The 159 remains the last of its kind - an Alfa for all senses, but with substance.
Today, the Alfa Romeo 159 is a mature character actor - especially desirable as a Ti version, Q4, or Sportwagon. Those who drive it combine style with strength, and the Alfa spirit with substance.
