Alfa Romeo 164 – Grandeur in the Later Years
With the launch of the Alfa Romeo 164 in 1987, a new chapter began. After years of following its own engineering paths, Alfa introduced for the first time a front-wheel-drive executive sedan – and proved that character, performance, and style could exist even without the Transaxle layout. The 164 wasn’t a retreat – it was a bold new beginning: modern, elegant, confident.
Its design came from Pininfarina – angular, clean, sculptural. The low beltline, narrow glass band, and distinctive rear end gave it a sovereign yet unmistakably Italian presence. Though it shared the “Tipo 4” platform with Saab, Lancia, and Fiat, the 164 stood apart – visually and dynamically.
Technically, the 164 offered a wide range of engines: from the 2.0 Twin Spark and turbocharged variants to the glorious 3.0-liter “Busso” V6 with up to 232 hp in the 164 QV. Its handling was sporty yet long-distance capable. Later models with active rear axle geometry (CSB) and electronically adjustable suspension turned the 164 into a technological benchmark.
Inside, the 164 was modern and comfortable: clear instruments, high-quality seats, elegant materials – and plenty of charming 1980s digital touches in some versions. The 164 Super and QV topped the range with sporty details and full luxury appointments.
Built until 1997, the 164 was the last Alfa with a transversely mounted Busso V6, bridging the old Alfa era and the new. It marked the elegant finale of Alfa’s unique take on the executive class.
Today, the 164 is an underrated classic – stylish, fast, full of character. Those who drive one make a conscious choice: for lines over loudness, and technology with soul.
